Backup distance protection is an important function of RED670 line differential protection equipment. When the communication channel is interrupted, distance protection can be used as an alternative backup protection. This means that when the main line protection (such as differential protection) does not work properly due to a communication failure, the back-up distance protection will continue to provide protection for the line.

Specifically, backup distance protection is based on the impedance principle and is achieved by measuring and comparing changes in line impedance. When the line fails, the impedance value will change, and when the preset threshold is exceeded, the backup distance protection will be triggered and the corresponding trip operation will be performed to cut off the faulty line.

The backup distance protection is selective, which means that it can distinguish between the faulty line and other normal lines, and only cut off the faulty line, thereby minimizing the power outage range and improving the reliability of the power supply.

In practical application, the RED670 line differential protection equipment realizes the coordination of main protection and backup protection by cooperating with the communication system.
