Flame detection equipment is the key equipment in the boiler furnace safety monitoring system (FSSS) of thermal power plants. Its role runs through the whole process from boiler start-up to full load operation. It is used to determine the establishment/extinguishment of the flame in the full furnace or the unit burner, or the presence and absence of fire. The contact of the flame detection equipment accurately acts to send an alarm, and relies on the chain function of the FSSS system to stop the operation of the corresponding powder feeder, coal mill, fuel main valve or primary fan, etc., to prevent the accumulation of fuel in the furnace, and the abnormal situation is ignited to cause the malignant accident of the boiler explosion. Therefore, the equipment performance, that is, the reliability of equipment operation and the accuracy of detection, is directly related to the operation safety and stability of the unit.
The earliest flame detector appeared in the 1950s, the 1960s abroad first developed an ultraviolet flame detector, from the 1970s, there have been foreign flame detectors to detect the release of infrared and visible light when the flame burns, and in the 1980s there was a boiler combustion monitoring device based on images and videos. Later, there were flame detectors with combined probes (infrared and ultraviolet). So far, the detection and discrimination ability of the flame detector has become stronger and stronger, and the detection has become increasingly intelligent.

The essence of the combustion of oil, coal or gas fuel is that the chemical energy of the fuel is released in the form of electromagnetic waves, and the burner flame can generally emit almost continuous luminescence spectrum. Gas flame has rich ultraviolet, infrared and less visible light, and for a single burner flame, its radiation spectrum is regularly distributed along the flame axis, for example, pulverized coal boiler pulverized coal burner along the axis from inside to outside is divided into four regions, namely preheating zone, initial combustion zone, safe combustion zone and burnout zone.
