Servo valves are usually used in precision control equipment for precision applications, while proportional valves are mainly used to meet the needs of basic control applications. The main difference between servo valves and proportional valves is the difference in the median hiding amount. The servo valve spool cover is less than 3% of the stroke, while the proportional valve cover is greater than or equal to 3% (refer to ISO 5598). Thus, usually the servo valve spool moves within a hardened valve sleeve, while the proportional valve spool moves directly within the cast iron body (MOOG’s proportional valves also have a sleeve). Electrical and mechanical feedback

All MOOG servo valves and proportional valves are equipped with spool position closed-loop control, so a spool position feedback is required. MOOG uses two types of feedback: mechanical and electrical. Mechanical feedback (MFB) valves use a feedback spring lever to give a mechanical feedback signal to the torque motor when the movement of the spool forces it out of shape. This type of valve does not require an integrated electronic amplifier to operate. Electrical feedback (EFB) valves use electrical position sensors to detect the spool position. Due to signal electrical feedback, EFB valves require integrated electronic amplifiers to operate. MOOG valves typically have an amplifier integrated into the body, eliminating the need for an external control amplifier.
