Schneider Electric AS-BDAU-204 Overview

The Modicon AS-BDAU-204 is an analog input module manufactured by Schneider Electric. This unit has four channels and is without opto-isolation. It carries out several tasks including dual-slope integrating A/D conversions, converting analog values into 12-bit digital values. This is done for the recommended range. You can use the Modicon AS-BDAU-204 with either two-wire +/- 500 mV sensor field units or PT100 four-wire resistance temp detector field devices.

Features

Field Wiring

For the ASBDAU204 configuration, use 60/75 copper (Cu) for the power connections and 4.5 in-lb. of torque for the set screws. To prevent errors in-field device operation, follow these guidelines:

Use shielded, twisted-pair cable (such as Belden 9418).

Ground the shield of each signal cable at the DAU 204 only. At the other end each signal cable, peel back the shield and insulate it from contact with the signal-carrying wires.

Route each signal cable as far as possible from sources of electrical noise (such as motors, transformers, contactors, and especially AC devices).

Route the signal cables in a conduit different from the AC and power cables.

If the signal cables must cross AC or power cables, ensure that they cross at right angles.

When connecting field devices to the module, keep the unshielded portions of the signal-carrying wires as short as possible.

After wiring the terminal blocks, use the supplied keys to prevent the blocks from being switched inadvertently.

Advantages

The Modicon AS-BDAU-204 is a 4-channel analog output module that is designed to control adjustable frequency drives, positioning valves, dampers, etc. Each channel is independently configurable to provide either voltage or current loop output.

For proper operation, the module requires power from an external source (250mA @ 24VDC). When an external source is NOT used the module pulls power from the internal bus and gives a false reading. Do not leave this module unpowered in the rack.

The ASBDAU204 module features open current loop (broken wire) detection with warnings via LED and accessible registers. The ASBDAU204 can be configured to hold the last value in the event communication to the CPU is lost for more than 1 second, the CPU is stopped or power is lost.

There is an Amber LED on the front of the module that flashes to indicate a module fault. A Green LED at the top front of the module indicates the readiness of the module. A Green LED at each channel will remain on or flash quickly as data is sent over the channel. In

current mode a Red LED at each channel indicates an open current loop (broken wire) or a high loop impedance (>500Ω) is detected.

How to use an AS-BDAU-204

It is recommended that unused channels be set to voltage mode for the ASBDAU204 configuration. This setting shuts off the red LED current loop error indicator and alarm bit. Alternatively, unused current output channels should be shorted. You must use both poles together to properly set a channel’s mode; not doing so will generate invalid results.
