IO-Link is a point-to-point, serial digital communication protocol whose purpose is to periodically exchange data between sensors/actuators and controllers (PLCS). The IO-Link protocol was first proposed by Siemens and is now the international standard IEC 61131-9. With the advancement of Industry 4.0, IO-Link is being used more and more widely. In this article today, we will introduce the definition of IO-Link protocol and its interface.

The executive layer, which includes various actuators (valves, pumps, motors, etc.) and sensors, is the muscle and peripheral nerve of factory automation, which receives commands from above and completes specified actions.

The field layer includes a variety of distributed IO systems, which are the central nervous system of factory automation. It conveys the control instructions from the upper level to the executive level; The signal of the executive layer is fed back to the control layer, which plays the role of the information center.

The field control layer includes a variety of PLC systems, which are the brains of factory automation. According to the requirements of internal procedures and the signal feedback of the executive level, it issues corresponding instructions and directs the executive level to complete the corresponding actions;

The workshop control layer (MES) and the management layer communicate with the PLC systems at the management level to complete the management tasks at the workshop and factory level.

The IO-Link protocol introduced in this article is a protocol for transferring data between the execution layer and the field layer. An IO-Link system consists of the following parts:
1) IO-Link Supervisor (IO-Link Master);
2) IO-Link Device (IO-Link Device);
3) Unshielded 3-5 core standard cable;
4) Tool for IO-Link parameter configuration;

The IO-Link Master transfers data between the IO-Link device and the PLC. It is usually a distributed IO module with an IO-link connection channel on the module. The IO-Link Device is connected to the channel of the IO-Link Master through a cable, and the IO-Link master exchanges data with the PLC through the bus.
