What is an amplifier?
An amplifier is a generic term used to describe a circuit that generates and increases the version of its input signal. But not all amplifying circuits are the same, as they are classified according to their circuit configuration and mode of operation.

The amplification difference between the input and output signals is called the gain of the amplifier.

Gain is basically a measure of how much the amplifier “amplifies” the input signal. For example, if we have a 1V input signal and a 50V output, then the gain of the amplifier will be “50”. In other words, the input signal has increased by a factor of 50. This increase is called gain.

The amplifier gain is simply the ratio of the output divided by the input. Gain does not have A unit as its ratio, but in electronics it is usually given the symbol “A” for amplification. The gain of the amplifier can then be simply calculated as “output signal divided by input signal”.

The introduction of amplifier gain can be said to be the relationship between the signal measured at the output and the signal measured at the input. There are three different types of amplifier gain that can be measured, they are: voltage gain (Av), current gain (Ai), and power gain (Ap), depending on the amount being measured, examples of these different types of gain are given below.
